TIMM x Thole Life, love and death
Materials: terracotta with terra sigillata
Thrown on the wheel
“I declare
That later on,
Even in an age unlike our own,
Someone will remember who we are.”
This poem by Sappho inspired Samantha Thole and Maud Timmermans (TIMM X Thole) to make Life, love and death. This ceramic triptych symbolizes the fundamental events in the life of every human being, regardless of who we are, what we are, or when we live. Each bowl is painted with a theme: the birth of Aphrodite symbolizes life, a lively orgy represents love, and the dying Adonis refers to death. The bowls are richly decorated all around with fish, octopuses, pomegranates, ears of wheat, autumn leaves, and symbols of rebirth.
On the exterior of the bowl Life accompanied by two octopuses, appear the verses that inspired this series:
Μνάσεσθαί τινά φαμι καὶ ὔστερον ἄμμεων.
('Someone, I tell you, will remember us even in another time.')
A TIMM X Thole collaboration: the bowl was hand-thrown by Maud Timmermans of TIMM Ceramics and the painting by Samantha Thole.
